The Stadionbrache, located on the site of the former Hardturm football stadium in Zürich West, has been unused since the stadium's demolition in early 2008. In June 2011, the city of Zürich entrusted the area to the Verein Stadionbrache for non-commercial interim use until construction begins on the new Hardturm stadium. The association fosters a communal space for creative interim use, emphasizing neighborhood-friendly, eco-friendly, and non-profit social and cultural projects.
Captivated by its natural beauty, we lamented the thought of such rich flora being supplanted by urban structures. This sentiment led us to ponder the unseen marvels beneath— the complex root networks supporting the growth above. Resolved to preserve this concealed beauty, we employed AR technology to recreate and showcase it.
To ensure authenticity in our representation, we meticulously measured the trees' height and width and identified their species. This allowed us to model an informed approximation of the corresponding root systems. Additionally we concentrated on a specific portion of the Stadionbrache, enhancing the precision and feasibility of our digital reconstruction. Using Processing and our collected data, we generated these roots, and with Blender, assembled the full scene. This was subsequently brought to life in augmented reality via Reality Composer. Amplifying the immersion, we incorporated auditory elements from the soil, using devices provided by Sounding Soil.
